You will soon unlock your hotel room with your smartphone

U Google Wallet wants to make the hotel experience less tedious by adding support for hotel card keys. As 9to5Google reveals, Google has updated the app’s support pages and announced that Google Wallet will now be able to store hotel keys, apparently in those that support the feature.

Adding a hotel card key will work similarly to adding a credit or debit card. Go to the hotel website, app or follow the email instructions and click on the option Add to Google Wallet. From there, you will enter and be able to add the hotel to be able to check into your room for the duration of your stay without having to draw a card.

To use your smartphone as a hotel room key, all you have to do is take it out of your pocket, unlock it, and hold the back of the device near the door handle. Some phone models, however, do not need to be unlocked first for the system to work

While the idea of adding a hotel card key to Google Wallet sounds convenient, there is currently a major obstacle. Google Wallet is not automatically compatible with all card key systems, so hotel chains need to add support first. At the moment, very few hotels support the feature, with the Clarion Hotel Post in Gothenburg, Sweden being one of the few hotels confirmed so far.

Hopefully Google will work with the major chains to roll this out faster.
