Yes from July 8 to the 14 of the same month again throughout Europe Art Nouveau Week, a week dedicated to this fascinating cultural and artistic movement of the beginning of the 20th century. This means that interesting events are also planned in our country, which for the 2024 edition will be combined with the common thread of “happiness”. We will find out together.
Art Nouveau Week 2024
During the days ofArt Nouveau Week 2024 the authors of this elegant movement will be celebrated, such as Gustav Klimt, Alphonse Mucha and Giuseppe Sommaruga, thanks to many different events and activities promoted and partly organized byItalian Freedom Association and curated by Andrea Speziali together with a scientific and honorary committee.
Guided tours, conferences and large tours, under the patronage of the Ministry of Culture, the ENIT and the municipality of Palermo, await visitors throughout the national territory, where the monuments created according to the dictates of this style will be valued very refined.
Just think what they will be more than 100 buildings open to the publicstructures that are not normally accessible, creating a widespread network and an “open-air exhibition” with forty guided tours per day: in all, there are 200 cities involved, to show the public the cultural richness of the Art Nouveau of our country. and throughout Europe.
The Art Nouveau of Palermo and Catania
Palermo is the city that hosts the international series of conferences Architecture and art in Palermo during the Freedom period. At the end of this edition, scheduled guided tours are organized (Thursday 11, Saturday 13 and Sunday 14 July) in the city to discover the buildings with modernist decoration, while the series of conferences divided into three days will be held in different places : from the famous and exclusive Hotel Villa Igiea (July 12 at 3:30 p.m.), in the hall of the Confcommerciu headquarters (July 10 at 3:30 p.m.) and at the Antonino Salinas Regional Archaeological Museum (July 13 at 9:30 a.m.).
The itinerary to get to know the Sicilian capital stretches through the historic center and the bourgeois residences of Via Dante. We will visit Villino Favarolo, today the photography museum of Palermo and Villino Florio, a leader of the Sicilian Freedom.
Catania see an extraordinary appointment at his Villa Ardizzone, historic residence of the early 1900s, located in an avenue characterized by the presence of numerous Art Nouveau buildings. This wonder will open its doors to the public on Tuesday, July 9 at 7 p.m. and Thursday, July 11 at 7 p.m., with a guided tour inside the residence.
Art Nouveau in Milan
Milan is our Capital of Freedom, and the merit goes above all to the works of Giuseppe Sommaruga. Therefore, visits are planned to the Palazzo Castiglioni, with the facades recently restored and once again shining in their originality, to the Central Station and to the Campanini House with a visit to the entrance, the court and the stairs .
But that’s not all, because in the program there are also visits to the Santa Teresa Pharmacy, to the Villa Romeo Faccanoni in Sommaruga and also itineraries in the ideal city of Crespi d’Adda (Bergamo). In detail:
- Thursday, July 11, 7 p.m.: the workers’ village of Crespi d’Adda;
- Friday, July 12, 10:30 a.m.: Milan Central Station and its surroundings;
- Friday, July 12, 6 p.m.: Liberty in the heart of Milan: not just a residence;
- Saturday, July 13, 10:30 a.m.: Liberty at Porta Venezia: the high class, public baths and floral arrangements;
- Sunday, July 14, 10:30 a.m.: Liberty at Porta Vercellina: the bourgeoisie moves to the suburbs.
But that’s not all, because at i Civic Museums of Monza will celebrate the 157th anniversary of the birth of the architect Giuseppe Sommaruga, which will take place on July 11.
Other appointments throughout Italy
Marvels from the Art Nouveau even to Rimini and especially to the Malatesta Temple where you discover the musical angels and cherubs that stand out on the blue background sculpted by Agostino di Duccio. Still in Emilia-Romagna, visit the Arte Povera and Vintage Records Museums inside Palazzo Ripa-Marcosanti in Sogliano al Rubicone.
An incredible heritage is also that of Sardinia, especially the city of Sassari where you can take part in an event dedicated to fashion and female creativity in Italy at the beginning of the 20th century, a walk to discover the Art Nouveau funerary monuments at the Monumental Cemetery, and a reading of texts from the period between the wonders of the Monserrato Park.

In Puglia we recommend guided tours of the city of Bari among stones and paintings, while you should not miss a visit to Villa Zanelli, one of the most significant Art Nouveau masterpieces in Italy (more precisely in Savona), which after twenty years of degradation it is back to being the masterpiece that it is.
