block the joints to reduce inflammation, this is possible in some cases

What are the limitations of this injection treatment to fight osteoarthritis?

The only cases affected are osteoarthritis of the knee where medical treatment has failed. The results are confirmed by other trials, especially in Japan, but with small numbers and different products injected. Hence the interest of the new ongoing study carried out with the Clinical Research Program of the Hospital (PHRC) with 130 patients who are not candidates for surgery. Two thirds are treated with lipiodol, based on a natural plant extract, with one third receiving a placebo*. The expected conclusion in two to three years.

* For this study, 130 patients with osteoarthritis of the knee, who have failed medical treatment and are not candidates for surgery, will be recruited. Registration possible at recherche.embolisation@gmail.com

• Treatment of osteoarthritis of the knee with this treatment, when will it be possible?

This technique is already used by interventional radiologists in Nîmes, Montpellier, Grenoble, Paris (Hospital Europe Georges-Pompidou), Lyon, Bordeaux, but to date only for compassionate purposes, that is after failure of all other treatments. The new study aims to expand eligible patients.
