If you ever decide travel with your pet, you certainly know how difficult – and sometimes even expensive – it can be. Some good news comes from Trenorth, the Lombardy Railway Company, which has decided to eliminate the supplement for those who bring their dog or cat with them on board their regional trains. The initiative came into force last April 1, 2024 and is applicable to all railway routes within the limits of validity of the Regional Railway Tariff of Lombardy.
“The free availability of leashed dogs and other domestic animals is a real act of civility and sensitivity towards our 4-legged friends, who increasingly accompany us on rail journeys” – he said. The requirements to be met

The first is the territorial limit: if we want to deal with supra-regional or cross-border routes, we need to buy the animal supplement, according to the methods indicated by the railroad companies who manages the service. There are also times when dogs and cats cannot travel: they are the most crowded, when the trains are full of commuters and students who have to travel every day. Therefore, it is not possible to bring pets on board on weekdays (from Monday to Friday). time slots 7:00-9:30 and 17:30-19:30.
No limits at other times and on public holidays, including weekends. As for the mode of transport, dogs must be kept on a leash and their owners must be muzzled, to be worn upon request by the onboard staff. In addition, you must be in possession of the registration certificate of the dog registry, which can be shown on request. Cats and small pets, however, must travel indoorsspecial carrierwhich cannot have dimensions larger than 70cm x 30cm x 50cm.
Obviously the following are excluded guide dogs, who can travel for free in any case (even during “prohibited” times) if they accompany the blind. Thanks to this initiative adopted by Trenorth, moving with your pets finally becomes easier and cheaper. However, it is important to always carefully check the road to travel, to avoid going outside the limits of validity and thus running into a fine for non-payment of the supplement.
